The theme of the Hackathon, named “Field Hockey Drag-Flick Challenge”, is based on a specialized technique used in the sport of field hockey which is called the “Drag-Flick”. This technique is used during penalty corners or direct flick attempts on goal and allows the player to generate powerful shots with speed and precision, making it difficult for goalkeepers to save by the stick. This flicking action involves a combination of wrist, forearm, and shoulder movements to propel the ball towards the goal and goes through a set of phases.
Kinetic Analysis provided data and measurements from 1500 Drag-Flick movements (see Section 4) and posed the following (not exhaustive) set of challenges and tasks to the hackathon participants:
- Increase the accuracy of the segmentation of keyframes
- Create a predictive model for the outcome ball speed
- Suggest a more minimal sensor set up based on the current full body (17sensors) kinematic data
- Compare different analysis techniques
A total of five teams were formed and participated to the RAIS Hackathon. Each team comprised a minimum of two members and a maximum of three members. All teams consisted of RAIS fellows, students and researchers from RAIS member institutions. Specifically, the teams and their members were the following:
- Team1 – AUTH1: Karagianni Christina - Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Yfantidou Sofia - Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH)
- Team2 – AUTH2: Paraschou Eva - Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Giakatos Dimitrios Panteleimon - Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Gkiouzelis Nikolaos - Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH)
- Team3 – Multiculturals: Marchioro Thomas - Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), Andrei Kazlouski - Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), Ioannou George - University of Cyprus (UCY)
- Team4 – UCY+INSUB: Awais Bin Asif - University of Cyprus (UCY), Michalis Kasioulis - University of Cyprus (UCY), Ahmed Lekssays - University of Insubria (INSUB)
- Team5 – KTH: Lodovico Giaretta - Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Ahmed Emad - Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Filip Cornell - Royal Institute of Technology (KTH)
